Mary Hurlbert

1924 - 2009

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Hurlbert(2009)

Mary Ruth Hurlbert, beloved wife of the late Arnold Hurlbert, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Friday, January 30, 2009 at the age of 84 years. Mary was born on February 9, 1924 and raised in Seven Persons, one of nine children to Alfred and Ellen Worrall. She married Arnold Hurlbert, June 20, 1942 and was blessed with three children. Family time was spent at the cabin in Elkwater where she enjoyed the likes of the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. In her leisure time she relaxed by doing crafts and going shopping. Mary also liked to try her luck at Bingo and even won on occasion. When the cold winter months would set in, she would set her sights on heading down to the U.S. and was considered a "Snow Bird." Mary was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 55 years and was a member of the Eagles Club since 1977. Mary worked as a cook in various establishments and took her skills home with her to her family. As a family oriented lady and a wonderful mom, she made sure her family was looked after. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren! She will be greatly missed by a special friend Chris Schue and her memory will live in the hearts of her children, Gloria Hurlbert and family, Natalie (Stewart) Lawton and Jason (Linzi) Schaffer; a son, Sidney (Gail) Hurlbert and family, Lee (Kelly) Fischer and Clayton (Shandi) Hurlbert; son-in-law, Bruce Nott and family, Grant (Sarah) Nott and Doug (Carla) Nott; sisters, Margaret Maughan and Rosetta (Lloyd) Brosnikoff; sisters-in-law, Esther Hurlbert and Carol (Bob) Kinpel and a brother-in-law, Wilf (Gladys) Hurlbert as well as 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Alfred (Ellen) Worrall; husband, Arnold Hurlbert; daughter, Gladys Nott; grandson, Lorne Nott; sister, Lillian Worrall, brother, Dick (Bertha) Worrall and a sister, Pat Henklman. The Funeral Service and Celebration of Mary's life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W., on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Bob Findley officiating. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Mary's name may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, #124, 430 - 6th Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2S8.
