Obituary - Mary Newton

Mary Newton

1922 - 2013

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Newton(2013)
The family of Mary Newton announce her passing which occurred at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the age of 91 years. Cecilia Mary Newton (nee Hinton) was born on January 12, 1922, in Birkenhead, England. Mary married the love of her life, Fred, in 1941 and they remained married for 58 years until his passing. In her teens, she found her true calling as a nurse, a career that lasted much of her life. After starting a family and living in Stoke-on-Trent for several years, they both decided to start a new life in Canada. Fred immigrated to Canada first in 1954, settling in Medicine Hat to work at the potteries. Mary followed him with children, David, William and Louise in 1955. Her greatest joy was her family and friends and she was happiest when she was needed and could care for others. She loved to host parties and the Newton House was well known for its gatherings. She was extraordinarily generous with her love, time, money, and possessions. She gave much to those she felt needed it more than her and will be fondly remembered by her family and all those she adopted who called her “Mom” and “Aunty Mary”. Mary is survived by her children, William Newton, Louise (Norm) Vernal, Michael (Linda) Newton, Maureen Newton and daughter-in-law, Jeanette Newton; grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer) Newton, Timothy (Olga) Newton, Lenor Wakeling,  John (Tracy) Vernal, Karen (Darren) Keddie, Sarah Newton, Jeremiah Newton, Tanya (Alfredo) Molleda, Adam Newton and Sam Villeneuve; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Joel, Logan, Bethany, Olivia, Rylan, Shandri, Makayla, Ezra, Adrian, Gavin and Andrew. She is also survived by her brother, William Hinton (New Zealand) and sister, Joan Scales (England). She was predeceased by her beloved husband Fred; eldest son, David; parents, William and Kate as well as two sisters, Kathleen and Pamela. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, November 8, 2013, between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. as well as on Saturday, November 9, 2013, starting one hour prior to the service. The service celebrating Mary's life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Barrett Scheske officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow at the Inspire Café. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Mary’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102, 73 - 7 Street S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 1J2 or to the Save Old Souls Sr. K-9 Rescue Society, P.O. It was with deep sadness that I read of Mary's passing. She was one of my favorites at Cypress View Foundation. We all really enjoyed her sunny disposition, courage and humour. May it help in some small way to know that others share your sorrow. God bless you. Joanne Hunter, retired Secretary
