Meta Margaret Romanuck, beloved wife of the late Nicholas Romanuck, passed away in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at the age of 87 years. Meta is survived by four children, Nickie Romanuck of Medicine Hat; John (Janice) Romanuck and their children, Adam, Heather and Susan of Medicine Hat; David Romanuck of Medicine Hat and Mary Romanuck of Saskatoon, SK. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lou Knesh of Medicine Hat and two brothers-in-law, Robert (Barbara) Romanuck of Medicine Hat, Orval Lyons of Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom she delighted in getting family news from. Meta was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas Romanuck in 1994; her parents, Jacob Schuler and Margaret Ackerman; her brothers and their wives, Jack (Kate) Schuler, John Schuler, George (Ida) Schuler, Edward (Alice) Schuler; her sisters and their husbands, Sarah (James) Hogg and Martha (Lou) Higgins. Meta was born on May 22, 1920 in Medicine Hat. After graduating from High School, Meta attended Normal School in Calgary, graduating as a teacher in 1937. She taught in the Irvine area for six years before pursuing a nursing career. Meta graduated from Medicine Hat General Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She was the Night Supervisor at the hospital, and also taught many of the following classes of nurses. Every spring, Meta enjoyed the company of her fellow nurses at her Nurses Reunion Banquet. Meta was an adventurous woman. After the war was over, she hitch-hiked to Ottawa to see the Parliament Buildings, continuing on to Moncton, N.B., where she cared for babies in the hospital there. Meta also enjoyed cycling, and on one trip, went to Banff with her girl friends where they cycled through the mountains. Meta married Nicholas Romanuck on August 28, 1953. They raised their four children in Medicine Hat. She enjoyed the company of many nieces and nephews over the years that used her home as lodging. Her home was a place where many meals, games of cards, stories, jokes and laughs were shared. Family unity and togetherness were very important to her. She organized many family reunions in Kin Coulee which facilitated many good memories for her family. Some of Meta's passions included fishing, gambling and travel. Meta was also talented with her hands. She enjoyed knitting and weaving rugs. Meta loved curling, and later on in life, enjoyed watching it on T.V. While actively curling, whether her team won or lost, they had a great time bonspieling. If Meta had one regret in life, it was that her grandchildren arrived later on. She said she had no control over that however, and really enjoyed being grandma. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, July 7, 2007, at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
