Obituary - Mark Aasman

Mark Aasman

August 15, 1941 - June 10, 2010

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Aasman(June 10, 2010)

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear brother and uncle, Mark Aasman. Mark went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at the age of 68 years while surrounded by his loved ones. He will be greatly missed by his twin brother, Bill (Tina) Aasman and their daughters, Nancy (Aaron) Klein and their children, Hayley and Gabrielle; Kathy (Ian) Scrivener and their children, Katie, Faith and Jaxon; Monica (Leigh) Scrivener and their children, Dylan, Marissa and Brody. A strong man, a man of few words, a “non-conversationalist” he called himself; but a wise man, full of respect, integrity and love. It was heart-wrenching to watch such a strong, capable, and courageous man being robbed of his independence and strength by cancer. Yet as we sat around his bedside, he continued to make us smile with the twinkle in his eyes. Though a bachelor, Mark never really was alone. After a farming accident in 1981, Mark stayed with Bill and Tina and their daughters, Nancy, Kathy and Monica. He enjoyed it with them so much, he moved right in and gave the girls a second father. He was a true blessing and enriched their lives deeply. Mark was born on August 15, 1941, in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada with his entire family on May 1, 1950. They came to Taber, Alberta and moved to Barnwell and Redcliff before they finally settled at the homestead in 1955. Bill and Mark bought the farm from their parents in 1966, and farmed together for 35 years before retiring in Medicine Hat. Mark enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, reading, time with family, investing, nature, and tinkering with his tools. He was predeceased by his parents, Arend and Henrietta Aasman; brothers, Casey, James and Johnny as well as brother-in-law, Reuben Wenzel. He is survived by his sisters, Pearl (Jim) Rodermond, Betty (Homer) Oudman, Jeanette (Luke) Brouwer, Jean (John) Brouwer and Ellie Wenzel; brothers, Robert (Nel) Aasman, Sam (Gerda) Aasman and Bill (Tina) Aasman; sisters-in-law, Ina (C), Ina (J) and Jackie Aasman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. We would like to thank all the staff at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, the Palliative Care Unit and the Tom Baker Cancer Center. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, between 7:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. A Celebration of Mark’s life will be held at the Christian Reformed Church, 300 Primrose Drive S.E., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at 1:30 P.M. with Pastor George Koopmans officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in memory of Mark may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, 666 - 5 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4H6.
