Wesley Toews

1931 - 2026

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Toews(2026)

It is with great sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of Wesley Newton Toews on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the age of 95 years.

Wes was born on February 8, 1931, in Linden, Alberta, the fifth child of C.C. and Anna Toews. He was raised on the family farm, growing up alongside his eight brothers and sisters and surrounded by the close-knit community that shaped his lifelong values of hard work, kindness and generosity.

After completing his schooling in Linden, Wes attended Teaching College, earning his Alberta Teaching Degree. He began his teaching career in Canyon Creek, Alberta, a northern community on the shores of Lesser Slave Lake. It was there that he met the love of his life, Christine “Teenie” Seppola. They were married on July 3, 1953, and soon moved to Medicine Hat, where Wes embarked on the second chapter of his working life.

Wes and Teenie purchased a small full-service gas station just outside of town, across from the Medicine Hat Municipal Airport on Highway 3. The family initially lived in the back of the station before building their home next door, where Wes and Teenie raised their four children: Dan, Laura, Matt and Todd.

The station became much more than a business. Over the next several decades, it served as a gathering place where Wes, Teenie and their family met and served countless customers, many of whom became lifelong friends. Wes’s Super Service operated for 54 years, closing in 2008, and left a lasting mark on the community.

With Teenie working hard at the station and raising their family, Wes eventually semi-retired at age 58, continuing to operate 10 quarters of farmland known as The Laurvel Ranch, near Canyon Creek and Lesser Slave Lake. There, he raised cattle and a few buffalo alongside his brother-in-law, Gordie Seppola. Throughout this time, Wes and Teenie remained active members of the Medicine Hat community. They were proud season ticket holders of the Medicine Hat Tigers from the franchise’s very beginning and cherished frequent gatherings with friends.

In July of 1991, Wes’ beloved soulmate Teenie was tragically killed in a vehicle accident. This loss brought profound grief, but with the unwavering support of family, friends and customers, Wes found strength in the many cherished memories they shared. A few years later, Wes met Marge Busse and they were married for several years. Wes later moved to the Wellington Independent Living Facility and eventually to SL4 Assisted Living, where he spent his remaining years until his peaceful passing.

Wes is survived by his devoted children: Laura Pleskie, Matt (Brenda) Toews, Todd Toews (Betty Monette) and daughter-in-law, Karen Taylor; grandchildren, Shawn (Candace) Robins, Jesse (Amanda) Robins, Amy (Chad) Kletzel, Stacey (Ryan) Gilchrist, Erik (Chelsey) Toews, Ryan (Vanessa) Toews and Kara Toews (Taylor Bader); great-grandchildren, Cade and Merrick Robins; Addyson and Sylis Robins; Finley, Campbell, Holland and Scottie Kletzel; Carter, Hudson and Lennon Gilchrist; Stevie, Sloane and Serena Toews; brothers, Gerry (Lorraine) Toews and Allen (Marge) Toews; sister-in-law, Anne Toews. Wes was predeceased by his wife, Teenie (1991); son, Dan (2001); six brothers and sisters as well as many extended family.

Wes will be remembered as a hardworking, kind, and generous man, always willing to lend a helping hand or share a good story. His more than fifty years at Wes’s Super Service created a legacy of friendship, community and countless memories that will live on through all who knew him.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at The Wellington for the compassionate and loving care provided to Wes.

A Come and Go Celebration of Wes’ life for family and friends will be held at Reflections, 937 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Sunday, March 8, 2026, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Private interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery.

Wes became a Pillar in the community southwest of the City in my growing up years. Ne’er a cross word was spoken or heard about him,or the service he and Teenie grew, expanded and operated. I recall the first years of them living in the back of the cramped quarters and new babies coming. Nothing dimmed their enthusiasm, nor their consistent pleasant and kind attitudes in business. Wes’s Super Service became historical along Highway 3, in or out of Medicine Hat!
God speed Wes, you left an admirable legacy for your descendants!

    To the Toews family,
We both have very fond memories of Wes and Teenie. It became our tradition to pick up our Christmas tree from their lot and then stop in for a visit. It didn’t matter the time, we were offered food and drink and good company whenever we stopped by. Please know that we send our love and condolences to you all.

    To the Toews family:
Mr. Toews was a wonderful man who always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. Stopping for gas always was a happy experience.
He was old school where his words and actions spoke volumes. He ran a business that gave many in the community a helping hand.
I will always remember him as the rep who stood up and fought for the return of the school bus for an eight-year-old girl who had to walk at the side of the #3 highway (without shoulders) to go to school. Without his advocacy I think I would have walked for more than one year.
He faced challenges and losses with quiet resolve and provided an example for all those around him. May your memories and stories plus his great legacy of how to live life and treat people always remain in your hearts.
