Obituary - Joanne Krutzler

Joanne Krutzler

1959 - 2025

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Krutzler(2025)

January 18, 1959 ~ October 15, 2025

It is with an extremely heavy heart that Perry announces the unexpected passing of his loving wife, Joanne Gail Krutzler. Along with Perry, left to cherish Joanne’s memory are her son, Greyson Mackenzie Clark; siblings, Marjorie (Les) Wonnenberg, Carol Franz, Shirley (David †) Maurer, Janice (Larney) Deboer and Calvin (Melissa) Boschee as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members of the Krutzler family and a son by choice, Jessie Card. She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Amanda Jean as well as by her parents, John and Jean Boschee.

Joanne was a lifelong resident of this area, with prairie dust in her veins and a deep love for the wide-open land she called home. She was raised on a farm in the Tothill district and learned the value of hard work early and carried that spirit with her throughout her life. Joanne attended school in Irvine and proudly kept in touch with many of her classmates over the years.

In her earlier years, she worked in road construction, helping to build the very routes she would one day travel. For many years, Joanne worked with the Medicine Hat News as a rural route driver, faithfully delivering papers through every kind of prairie weather—sun, snow, or storm—six days a week. Later, she spent many years with South Country Co-op, where her knowledge of animals made her the go-to person for advice—everyone knew Joanne was the one to ask.

She loved the farm life and everything that came with it. Horses, cows, dogs, and cats were all part of her world and she cherished them deeply. She was a proud member of the Rusty Spur Trail Riding Club and could often be found at cattle auctions, visiting the SPCA or just watching rodeo or her favorite cooking shows on tv. While she had a soft spot for most animals, she had no love for badgers, coyotes, or raccoons—she made that known with her trademark humour.

Joanne’s roots ran deep in prairie soil and she will be remembered for her grit, her loyalty, and her love for the land, the animals and the people who shared it with her.

A Celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating.

Joanne’s service was be live-streamed. Please view it below.

As the family informant, my Aunt Joanne was always the family historian to me, filling me in on the life that we were too young to witness. I do not regret the countless dinner parties we held together later in life, where discussions ranged from the time we spent working together at the newspaper to the chores doled out at the family farm and beyond.

As popularity goes, she was the most outgoing person I have met stemming from our heritage, a quality that rubbed off on me in my own life journey. A quality of trust in community that gave rise to many adventures near and far. Her only discretion was in her love for Jesus as God, a faith that was evident in her choice of music and television.

I will always remember watching one of her favourite actors Steve Martin perform his comedy sets as well as star in streaming series such as Only Murders in the Building atop Medicine Hat’s lonely high rise.

If there is anything we can learn from her life, it is that using sarcasm and humour to tough out the hard times is no sin, so long as we use it with those we hold dear.

My heart hurts with the passing of my dear Aunt Joanne. I love her deeply and will treasure her memory forever. She had a profound impact on my life and helped me through some big, challenging moments. We also shared a lot of good times and laughter! She loved to laugh and wasn’t afraid to shed a tear. She would also gladly share a piece of her mind when she thought it mattered. A true cowgirl, she had grit and grace. She loved her family, her friends, the prairies and country living. Wendy, Ben and I will miss her dearly and she will always be an inspiration to me for the rest of my days. Love you, Aunty Badger! 💙💙💙

It was heartbreaking to hear that my Aunt Joanne passed away. She was the best aunt I could have ever asked for; she taught me how to ride a horse and to take care of them. my condolences to my uncle Perry and cousin Greyson and Jesse.

My auntie was one of a kind, she had the biggest heart for animals (I would know ) she took in my cat (Echo) when I couldn’t find anybody else to take her. She loved her dogs and her horses and can’t forget about Mojo (the cat that doesn’t like anybody). You were always there when I needed to talk after my grandma and grandpa passed away (Bruce Krutzler, Uncle Perry’s brother) (Bernie Krutzler, Bruce’s wife) and was there when I just needed a break from other people. I love you so much Auntie Jo.

I’m also heartbroken for the fact you won’t get to meet my kiddo ( due Nov 30th ) but I’m definitely gonna make sure I tell him all about you when he’s older❤️

May you rest in peace with my grandma and grandpa and all of your family

Sending my sincere sympathy and condolences to Perry, Greyson, and the rest of the family. I got to know Joanne well, while working with her at the Medicine Hat News (many years ago). We ran into each other many times over the years and always took the time to catch up and have a drink together. Her face always lit up when we saw each other and I am grateful to have known her. Joanne will be missed!
