On June 28, 2025, John Joseph Dobbin, age 72 years, of St. Mary’s Bay, Newfoundland, passed away peacefully from this life, spending his finals days surrounded by his loved one’s. Born on September 17, 1952, John leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and many cherished memories.
John always proved himself to be a very dedicated and passionate man. Starting at a young age, John spent many years of his life sailing deep waters as “a professional deep sea fisherman”, as John himself would say. Even after his time on the boats, there was never a dull moment and John would always find endless ways to occupy his time. If you asked any of his close relatives and friends to describe him, they would all go on to mention about many of the creative things he would do in his free time. Whether it was making homemade Christmas ornaments, or wampoo boards, he was always keeping himself occupied. Although, all things mentioned he was proud of, John was a family man at heart, through and through. His love, passion, and pride for his family was never ending, and his greatest accomplishments were his three shining stars; Summer, Terri-Lynn, and Blake.
He is survived by his children: Sonya, Johnny, Jeanette (Preston), and Wanda (Juan); his greatest joys, his grandchildren, Summer, Blake, Terri-Lynn (William), Jaxon (Sidney), and Kyler (Savannah) and his great-grandchildren, Enzo, Zylo, and Theodore. John also held a special place in his heart for his grandpuppy, Beau, who he loved sneaking bits of bologna and ham.
John leaves to mourn a large circle of family and friends, especially his lifelong friend, Harry Davis (Bride). Waiting to welcome him at the heavenly gate are his wife, Mona (née Knox); his precious grandson, John and many cherished family members and friends who predeceased him.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported John during his courageous battle with cancer and provided comfort in his final days.
“Gone Fishing”
He cast his line in quiet streams,
And found his peace where waters gleam.
Through battles fought and storms endured,
His love for us stayed strong and pure.
Now reunited, hand in hand,
With Mom above, in promised land.
His greatest catch was love so grand—
His children’s hearts, his grandkids’ hands.
We’ll see him where the rivers run,
Forever fishing in the sun.
Forever in our hearts, casting lines in eternal waters.
In accordance with John’s wishes, he will be laid to rest alongside his beloved Mona in Trepassey, NL, at a later date.

John's sister, Edwina, was married to my brother, Bill Corrigan. I often heard Bill speak of John, with great praise. He is now in the Peace that lasts forever.

Sincere condolences to all of John’s family and friends. Although we never crossed paths much over our adult lives, I have a ton of pleasant memories from our childhood days when an army of Dillons and Dobbins roamed The Lane. Rest in Peace, John! You have earned it!

So sad to hear of John's passing. I was fortunate to get to know him after moving to Medicine Hat. I will miss the interesting conversations on the shop floor when he came by for visits or for repairs to his car. May God bring comfort to the family during these times of sorrow and memories. Fair winds and following seas.

Our sincere condolences to all of John's family.
While we did not know him well, we certainly knew Mona and spoke to John at time of her passing.
They both courageously struck off to Alberta after the fishery shutdown.
May he rest in peace.
