It is with a heart full of gratitude for all the beautiful years we got to share that we announce the passing of Julia ‘Marylyn’ Yuhas. Marylyn passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat on Sunday, February 23rd, 2025 at the age of 88 years. Marylyn is lovingly remembered and forever cherished by her children: Glyn Yuhas (Darlene), Gary Yuhas and Marylynn Yuhas (Perry Sansregret); grandchildren: Robert Yuhas (Etheline Estacion), Jessilyn Forigo (Dan Forigo), Jennafer Yuhas, Justin Yuhas as well as her six great-grandchildren. Also left to cherish Marylyn’s memory are her beloved sisters and brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews and dear family friends. Marylyn was predeceased by the love of her life, Joe Yuhas; her parents, Mary and Walter Ostrom and step-father, Emil Wentz; her youngest son, Robert John Yuhas; and younger sister, Doris Greenstein. Marylyn was born in Empress, Alberta on September 13th, 1936, the eldest of 5 beautiful girls. She was a caring ‘big sister’, loving and mothering her sisters as her parents worked. She loved her sisters dearly and their bond remained strong throughout her life with countless memories made over the years. Early in her teen years, Marylyn met her ‘North Star’, Joe Yuhas, and they were soon married in November of 1953. Marylyn dedicated her life to her family and cherished her role as Mother. She loved her family fiercely and welcomed any opportunity to spend time with them, always maintaining an open door, ready to welcome family or friends for a visit. Marylyn and Joe enjoyed traveling together with many years spent wintering in Yuma, and enjoying several other trips to Montana, Hawaii, Las Vegas and Mexico. Marylyn’s love only expanded when she took on the role of Grandma. She always had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and particularly enjoyed gathering the family for Sunday morning brunches. She was blessed to gain the title of great-grandma and shared a special bond with great-granddaughters, Peighton, Kyleigh and Elena who lived close by. Perhaps her deep connection to the children of the family was due to the fact that the purity of heart, often associated with youth, is something Marylyn never lost. From humble beginnings, Marylyn showed an unparalleled appreciation for the simplicities of life that are often taken for granted. She shouldered challenges that came her way with grace and kindness, carrying life’s heaviness better than anyone. Marylyn told the best stories and those fortunate enough to hear them were rewarded with the rich inner perspectives of a woman who remembered and appreciated the smallest kindnesses, the talents of others and the infinite magic of the world around her. Marylyn was creative, enjoying photography as a hobby and demonstrating a special knack for finding and creating beauty from the simplest of things. She found beauty in sunsets and blue jays, a particularly sparkly rock or even an especially pretty candy wrapper which she might fashion into a faux flower to display on the Sunday breakfast table. Marylyn was full of compliments for each person she encountered and seemed only to see the best in everyone. You would never have heard an ill word or a complaint come from Marylyn, even in her trying later years. Marylyn believed that one should ‘forget a kindness that you do, but not a kindness done to you’, a motto that she exemplified daily. Marylyn was exceptionally grateful for the care she received at the South Country Villas and the family extends a special thanks as well. A celebration of Marylyn’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901-13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. Private interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery with a time of fellowship to be held thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice to spread a little sunshine like Marylyn would have done.

My sincere condolences to Glyn, as well as the entire family and friends of Marylyn. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to get to know her, it sounds like she was a very special lady. Her motto, ‘Forget a kindness that you do, but not a kindness done to you’, says it all. May she rest in peace.
