Obituary - Donald Aldag

Donald Aldag

1935 - 2024

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Aldag(2024)

It is with heavy hearts that the family announces that Donald Edward Aldag, beloved husband of Kaye, passed away at St. Joseph’s Home - Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at the age of 88 years.

Don was born on September 5, 1935, in Gull Lake, SK to parents, John and Harriett Aldag. Don was raised on the family farm in the Aldag District with his older brother, Calvin; older brother, Jerald (who died in infancy) and younger sister, Coleen. Don attended the rural Aldag School, located near the family farm and Luther College in Regina for one year, before returning to the Aldag District where he completed his schooling. Upon his return he began helping his Dad and brother, Calvin on the farm. In 1954, Don was hired by the oilfield company, Canadian Delhi Oil, where he worked until 1960. In 1957, he met the love of his life, Kathleen ‘Kaye’ Fenton who had come to the area with her brother who was also working in the oilfield. On July 21st, 1958, Don and Kaye were married at Good Hope Lutheran Church in the Aldag District, and they remained by each others’ sides for the next 66 years. While Don was working for Delhi, he began to purchase farmland and in 1968 when his father retired from farming, he purchased the homestead and an adjoining quarter of land. Don and Calvin continued to grow the farm that they grew up on until they retired in 2001.

During his years on the farm, Don was an active volunteer as a councilor for the R.M. of Carmichael and being a board member for the Lutheran Church and Gull Lake Special Care Home. Sports were also a big part of Don’s life as he was an original member of the Aldag Eagles fastball team that was formed in 1957 and played on a field that was located near the homestead. Later on, Don also became an avid curler and golfer, and he and Kaye were some of the Saskatchewan Roughriders most loyal fans.

Don was a very social person who loved visiting with family, friends and neighbours, whether it was when he and Kaye lived on the farm, retired to Gull Lake or eventually when they moved to their final home in the Grandview Village condos in Medicine Hat. It was here that they made many friends through the morning coffee gatherings, card/games nights and the regular outings to support the Medicine Hat Tigers hockey team and Medicine Hat Mavericks baseball team.

Don’s greatest life accomplishment was his family, being a devout husband and father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen ‘Kaye’; daughter, Debbie (Robert) Jensen; sons, John Aldag (Elaine St. John) and Rick Aldag (Krista Collier-Aldag); his grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Krista (Joel) Pullman, Daniel Jensen (Megan), Kai, Hattie and Kalani Aldag, Dayden Collier and Conner Aldag; great-grandchildren, Madison, Carter, Mikayla and Caleb Pullman, Evangeline, Lewis and Judah Jensen; sister, Coleen Retzlaff (Glen Fletcher) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his parents, John and Harriett Aldag as well as his brothers, Calvin and Jerald Aldag.

Don was respected by all who crossed his path. He was loved and he will be missed! A Celebration of Don's will be held at Victory Lutheran Church, 2793 Southview Drive S.E., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Grant Chrichton officiating.
