Obituary - Garth Allen

Garth Allen

1953 - 2024

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Allen(2024)

Garth David Allen passed away at Foothills Hospital in Calgary on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at the age of 71 years.

Garth was born in Medicine Hat on May 10th, 1953. He was raised in Bow Island and was a life long member of the community except for a brief period when he lived and worked in Lethbridge.

Most of his working career was at the Alberta Wheat Pool and his mentor was his Uncle Scotty Hurt. When Garth left the Wheat Pool, he went on to sell hail insurance and then did a brief stint driving around the country delivering trailers. When Garth retired, he had planned on traveling through the states, but unfortunately the world took a turn and everything went haywire, so he was not able to bring that plan to fruition.

Garth’s most favourite pastime was golfing; he loved it and the camaraderie that went with it. He also enjoyed many an evening out with his friends at the local establishment and snow skiing at various locations.

He was very interested in the political landscape in the US and spent many hours watching and listening with great interest every day to the newest shenanigans that were being revealed in the minute-by-minute live action updates provided by some of his favourite tv personalities.

Garth is survived by his stepchildren, Amber, Nikki and Michael; siblings, Gail, Pat, Gerald (Donna), Barb, Marj, Kathy and Dennis as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Merle and Theresa; sister, Charlie; niece, Dawne; nephew Chad, and great-niece, Ginger.

Dignified cremation has taken place. Garth will be silently remembered by family and friends. Memorial donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.

I was absolutely shocked to learn of Garth’s passing. I worked for him at Alberta Wheat Pool and he was one of the very best bosses and more importantly, a friend. He was so supportive of his staff and bent over backwards to help any of us. I am so sad to hear this and wish his family my deepest condolences.

I will truly miss Garth. He was a very true friend and we lived together for a period of time when I went through my own issues. We only kept brief contact which is my loss because Garth was so positive despite having his own problems.

I enjoyed moments in farming whether that involved hauling grain to Garth or purchasing insurance. Garth had a gentle personality and always had a “hi” when you’d meet.
My condolences to the Allen family.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends as we lose a good friend! I spent many days with Garth in friendship and working together since we first met in 1981. I appreciated how he always came with a quick wit, a chuckle and a story; whether skiing, golfing, at work or enjoying happy hour. Garth, you will be missed!

To the entire Allen family, I am so sorry for your loss. I am very close with Garth’s cousins (Carol and Marlynne Dodds) from Claresholm and remember playing with the Allen and Craig cousins in Claresholm at the Dodds’, Fort Macleod at the creek bottom for picnics or the farm in Bow Island. I feel so fortunate that Carol and Marlynne shared their cousins with me growing up as all mine lived in Northern Ireland. It was such a surprise to run into Garth years later at Alberta Wheat Pool when he came to head office where I was working. To think we both ended up working at the same company! Rest In Peace Garth and I can only imagine the big reunion going on right now! I never knew a family that loved reunions as much as the Allen’s and still do!

So sorry to hear this sad news. I worked with Garth for a few years at the Bow Island plant. Later I enjoyed working with him as his financial advisor. Many rounds of golf and beers were shared with this fine man...
We were friends first... business associates second. He was a great guy... who never wanted to lose an argument.. ha ha... rest easy my friend.. you will be missed
