Ludwig Schwarz

1929 - 2023

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Schwarz(2023)

July 5, 1929 ~ March 6 2023

Ludwig Schwarz, beloved husband of Collene, passed away in Medicine Hat on Monday March 6, 2023, at the age of 93 years. Ludwig will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Ron (Laurie) and Norman; grandchildren, Tonia (Soren) Hansen, Dave (Tracy) Schwarz, Michelle Bene (Scott), Marsha Schwarz (Scott), Jason Schwarz (Eliza), Mary-Marie Schwarz, Justin Schwarz (Mary), Frank Schwarz (Shannon), Brian Schwarz and Heather Green; great-grandchildren, David (Wynter), Richard, Sienna, Seth, Brooke (Cole), Brayden, Mackenzie, Johnathan, Ethan, Lucas, Nicholas, Kaylee, Cohen, Averie, Daxton, Alex and Alice; great-great-granddaughter, Everlee as well as numerous nieces, nephews and family members. Ludwig was sadly predeceased by his daughter, Marianne and son-in-law, Rick in 2021.

Ludwig, who was also know to some as Leonard or Louie, was born in Belarus on July 5th, 1929. He immigrated to Canada following some family members about the age of 21. He made his way across Canada with only a few dollars in his pocket and managed to find his siblings. After a while, Ludwig settled in the Crowsnest pass area where he met the love of his life, Collene in Burmis camp.

Ludwig and Collene were married on April 26, 1958. They raised their three children in Lethbridge, while working for the City of Lethbridge until he retired at the age of 55 years; “to let the next generation have a chance to work” he said.

Soon came his most precious title, Grandpa… He was extremely involved with all of his kids and grandkids. It would be hard to see him without a kid in tow!

Ludwig enjoyed dancing, camping, fishing, socializing, whittling and wood working and restoring old cars, but time spent with family meant the most to him. He will be missed by many!

A Celebration of Ludwig’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. A time of fellowship will follow thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. The service will be live streamed. Those who cannot attend but wish to experience the chapel service may visit our website and select the ‘View Broadcast’ button on the homepage at service time. Memorial donations in Ludwig’s name may be made to St. Joseph’s Home - Carmel Hospice, 156 - 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1.

Sorry to hear the passing of great uncle Leonard. I remember going to his birthday party here in Lethbridge where he invited everyone like a family reunion. I also remember as a kid seeing Leonard and Collene sometimes visiting at grandpa and grandma August and Alwina Schwarz's house. Leonard was always so welcoming. Thoughts are with all you guys at this time.

Sending condolences to the entire family. Grandpa S was a very special man I have so many memories whenever I smell homemade sausage it takes me back to being a kid. He accepted me into his family and made me feel special and loved just like his grandkids. Then my kids came and he made them feel loved as well. Thank you for being an amazing grandpa to me even though I wasn’t blood.
