Richard Redmond

1958 - 2021

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Redmond(2021) "Rick"

Richard (also known as Rick, Ritch, Ritchie or Rickie) William Redmond passed away suddenly at his home in Medicine Hat, Alberta, on Saturday November 20, 2021, at the age of 63 years.

Rick was born in Sarnia, Ontario on June 24, 1958, and was the son of Richard and Beverly Redmond. After graduating high school, Rick remained in Sarnia, working with his father at Redmond Mechanical Contractors. Rick then decided to start his studies at the University of Western Ontario and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1984. Rick was an accomplished and well-respected engineer and was always willing to teach and mentor the next generation of engineers.

With his degree in hand, Rick moved to Alberta where he began his long career with Royal Dutch Shell. He was involved in the Shell Caroline Plant before moving on to a leadership role at the Shell Scotford Plant in St. Albert. Through his roles at Shell, Rick was able to travel the world and visited many of Shell’s facilities in Western Canada, the United States and Europe. After his time at the Scotford Plant, Rick went on to work in Chester, England. Finally, Rick decided to come back to Canada. He settled in Medicine Hat and held a leadership role at Shell’s Criterion Plant until his retirement in 2015.

Once retired, Rick spent much of his time in his yard and garden and found enjoyment in growing his grapes, building his water feature and yard improvements. He became actively involved in the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce, the Medicine Hat Library Board and many other organizations in and around Medicine Hat. He loved living in Medicine Hat and gave back to the community he loved. Rick was also the President of the Medicine Hat Paddling Club. He was an avid fan of the outdoors and enjoyed spending time with family and friends hiking, biking, exploring, and camping. He turned his love of the outdoors into his passion for sailing and kayaking. Rick was also an avid and proud Oiler fan.

Rick is survived by his sister, Denise (Paul) Bonner; father, Richard (Shirley) Redmond; cousins, James (Carla) Bell and their children, Colin and Eric and Allison (Yogi) Kim and their children Nicklas, Isabelle and Tyler. Rick spent the last several years in a loving relationship with Corla Prentice, kayaking and exploring the west. He also stayed connected with his old buddies, Tommy Chesher, George Ayers and Mark Olacke.

Rick was predeceased by his mother, Beverly Doreen Bell (Redmond); uncle, William Alexander Bell and grandparents, William Tankard Bell, Margaret Alice Bell and Whitney and Effie Redmond.

A celebration of Rick’s life will be planned for the Spring/Summer of 2022 in Medicine Hat.

I met Rick through his work on the City of Medicine Hat Library Board. Rick was the Chair of the Board and he did great work in that role. He was also a kind and considerate person who cared a lot about the library staff and visitors. We are greatly saddened by his passing and we will miss him a lot. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to his partner and family.

I had the privilege of working alongside Rick at Shell’s Criterion facility from 2006 to 2014; and keeping in touch with him since then. Rick truly was an inspirational leader - he was eager to provide opportunities for his colleagues when they arose, and with that, guidance and support when needed; along with an unwavering commitment to ensuring safe and healthy operating conditions persisted so that no harm would occur to all the people working there. I have the opinion that Rick was one of the very few people I know that could truly ‘see the forest for the trees’. He will be missed. My sincerest sympathies to all his loved ones.

We were shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Ritch. We have been close friends with Ritch since my day's on Kathleen Avenue in Sarnia in the 1960's and throughout our lives to date. We were so glad that Ritch visited us on Manitoulin in the summer of 2019 and kayaked a bit together as well as chatting about so many things. We are going to miss Ritch very much. He was such a knowledgeable guy and enjoyed so many aspects of life. RIP my dear friend! Condolences to his family at large. HUGS

We were shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Rick's sudden passing and we offer you our sincere condolences.

We have known Rick since our time in Canada (2003-2007) when Rick and I were members of the site leadership team of the Shell Chemicals Scotford plant and in which period we developed a deep friendship that extended to Caroline, Louise and Laurine and that continued after our return to the Netherlands.

We feel blessed to have known Rick and been Rick's friend as he was a great person with genuine care and interest in others around him. We will very much miss our Canadian Friend.

I got to know Rick as member of the Medicine Hat Public Library Board, of which he was Chair. He was a great Library booster, leader and a visionary. Rick was a passionate participant in much of the life of Medicine Hat, so will be greatly missed. To Corla and Rick's family, I send my deep condolences. May you find comfort in your many memories of Rick.

We are saddened by the news of Rick's passing. Jodi and I had the privilege in getting to know Rick at our time in Scotford. Rick had a huge heart and always made the time to encourage and help. He encouraged and created a sense of family. I experienced that immediately at work with the extra curricular events such as the Kdays sour dough raft race. I will never forget the tokens of appreciation and celebration that Rick was always behind at the site - it always amazed me at how many gadgets he could combine in one - pen/highlighter/sticky note combos, laser pointer key chains, tape measure screw drivers, the list goes on. It was his way of saying thank you and unfortunately I never did tell him how much I appreciated it. Our thoughts are with you RWR!

Sincerest condolences to Rick's family, and especially to Corla.
I met Rick only 4 years ago. It was immediately evident that he was a man of integrity and passion for his community and the paddling club in Medicine Hat. He was welcoming, and shared his knowledge freely and enthusiastically. I enjoyed the kayaking adventures and conversations that ensued. Rick was a good man to have in our corner. He will be missed, but not forgotten.
    Rest In Peace my friend.
