Obituary - Garry Johnson

Garry Johnson

1941 - 2013

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Johnson(2013)
It is with sadness that the family of Garry Lyle Johnson, much loved husband of 50 years to Ellen; proud father to son, Lane (Daisy) and very proud grandpa to Zane, Reid and Boyd, announce his passing while at the Carmel Hospice, St. Joseph’s Home, on Friday, September 27, 2013, at the age of 71 years. Garry was predeceased by his son, Chad; father, Oliver and father-in-law, Arnold.  Along with Ellen, his memory will be cherished in the hearts of his mother, Marie; brother, Maurice (Sylvia); sister, Joyce?(George); mother-in-law, Ivy; brother and sister-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.  Garry was employed in the Oil Industry for all his working years until his retirement in 2000.  He was a master craftsman of wood spending time in his woodshop building and creating many items that made him proud.  Numerous friends and relatives can now say they have a piece of Garry’s work.  Golfing was one of his most enjoyable sports and there aren’t too many people he didn’t hassle or bet with while playing.  Garry and Ellen enjoyed holidaying and did so every year.  They rented a home in the Bullhead City area for the last three years including this past winter, where they relaxed and golfed while Garry continued to fight with cancer. A Celebration of Garry’s life will be held at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club, 947 Pigeon Street N.E., Medicine Hat on Friday, October 11, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The family would like to send a special thank you to the nursing staff at the Carmel Hospice for their thoughtful, compassionate and loving care given to Garry during his three week stay. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Carmel Hospice, St. Joseph’s Home, 156 - 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta,  T1A 5M1 or to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, 666 - 5 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta,  T1A 4H6.

    To Garry`s family and friend,
My deepest condolences. My husband Gary met Garry and Ellen in a small town, Consort where Garry and my Gary both worked for Dome Petroleum. There were many good times and fond memories of those years. I am sure that Garry and my Gary are harassing the angels as I remember them both as funsters. Our thought and prayers are with you all. Sincerely, Shirley,Shelly and Tammy.

    Ellen,
I am so sorry to hear the sad news. I still remember all the happy times you two had dancing the night away at the oilmen parties. Keep the memories alive and I am thinking of you.

I am sad to hear that Garry passed away. We worked "together" while at Crestar Energy; I worked at the Brooks District Office, Garry was in Jenner. I always had fun with Garry and appreciated his knowledge and patience. I had grabbed a Crestar Energy baseball cap for Garry at the Sept 2013 Crestar annual golf tournament and was going to visit him and give it to him; Garry died a weekend too soon. Thankfully though his pain is over.

    Dear Ellen and Family,
We have only just learned of Garry's passing and were saddened to hear of your loss. Although we have not lived in Medicine Hat for many years now, we have fond memories of our time there and Garry stands out as someone who was always a pleasure to visit with be it play or business. We will always recall Garry's kindness to us, his smile and many shared oil field and Norwegian tales.
Sincere condolences, Ted and Sandy Cutlan Calgary
