Margaret Dodds

1936 - 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Margaret Dodds on Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the age of 74 years.  She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband and soulmate, Roy Thomas Dodds on June 13, 2010.  Marg will be dearly missed by daughter, Darlene and son-in-law, Graham Gillespie from Nanaimo, B.C., and son, Brian in Medicine Hat as well as grandchildren, Colin Roy and Kayleigh Margaret Gillespie.  She also will be missed by her siblings, Joe (Doreen) and Harold (Grace) Phillips, Joan (Willie) Mollenbeck and Tom (Alice) Phillips and many nieces and nephews.  She is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Alec (Myrna) Dodds, Ellen (Alastair) Ferguson, Alice Islefson, Edith Slobodian, Laura Funk, Jerry Root, Lloyd (Ellen) Fischer, David Fisher, Joan (Richard) Pawleski and Linda Fischer.  Marg was pre-deceased by her brother, Ralph and sister-in-law, Georgina Phillips; infant son, Gary Joseph and parents, John and Catherine Phillips.  Marg also leaves behind her loving canine Mocha, who provided companionship and comfort after Roy’s passing.  Marg was born in Bromhead, Saskatchewan and grew up in the farming area of Watson.  She moved to Medicine Hat at the age of 17 where she met and married Roy in 1955.  They enjoyed a happy and loving marriage for 55 years.  She worked for 10 years at Dominion Glass in Redcliff, before Roy and Marg started Dodds Plumbing and Gasfitting in 1978.  They successfully ran the plumbing business until 1986 when Roy suffered a stroke.  Marg then became a devoted caregiver to Roy for 24 years until his passing.  Marg was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and was very devoted to her family, which was the focus of her life.  She enjoyed being a home-maker, working and relaxing at their cottage at Elkwater where she created many happy memories for her children, grandchildren, relatives and friends.  She was an avid reader and bowler in recent years.  The family would like to thank Dr.’s Jonker, Jena and Foley as well as the nursing staff of 5W and the Intensive and Palliative Care Units at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital for their excellent and compassionate care.  Vigil Prayers will be recited at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at 7:00 P.M.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat on Friday, October 14, 2011, at 10:30 A.M. with Father Philip Le celebrant.  Interment will follow in the Roman Catholic Section at Hillside Cemetery.  If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Marg’s name may be made to your choice of: Medicine Hat Palliative Care Society, 640 - 3rd Street S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 0H5, Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1B 4V3 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 124, 430 - 6th Ave. S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2S8.
