Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Klukus(2006)

Mrs. Magdalena (Maggie) Klukus of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Mr. Otto Klukus, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 6, 2006 at the age of 93 years. Maggie was born on August 11, 1912 in Josephsburg, Alberta (Elkwater). She moved with her family to a farm near Schuler, and in 1928, she married Otto Klukus. They farmed in the Schuler area until moving to Medicine Hat in 1941. In 1945, they purchased Bridge Street Grocery. They would later change the name to Klukus Grocery and they continued to operate the store until their retirement in 1968. Otto passed away in 1992, at which time Maggie moved into a condo at South Country Village. She loved her time there, but ill health forced her to move to the Central Park Lodge in 2001. Maggie had many friends at the Lodge, and this is where she resided until her passing. She is survived by three daughters, Violet Heid of Calgary, Viola (Alvin) Mehlhaff and Alvina (Ken) Peterson of Medicine Hat; two grandsons, Mark (Karen) Mehlhaff of Rocky Mountain House, Kyle (Terry) Peterson of Calgary; four granddaughters, Sheila (Dave) Steelbrand of Calgary, Gwen Mayzes of Medicine Hat, Barbara (Steve) Stoyanac of Spokane, Washington, Robin (Dr. Gerrit) Winkelaar of Edmonton; nine great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters and eleven great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Emma (Gus) Gruszie of Medicine Hat; three sisters-in-law, Lydia Flaig, Esther (Ben) Reinheller and Esther Kundert all of Medicine Hat; many nieces, nephews and friends as well as special friends, Vi and Spud Conte. Maggie was predeceased by her son-in-law, Howard Heid; one grandson, Steve Peterson; one grandson-in-law, Duane Wolfe; her parents, Martin Knoblich, Christina Gruszie and step-father, Carl Gruszie; two brothers, Emanuel Knoblich and Fred Knoblich, as well as three sisters, Rosie Betker, Christina Stern and Alvina Reiman. Maggie was a kind and generous lady who never spoke ill of anyone. Her doors were always open for relatives and friends for meals or lodging. Her motto was, "We were not put on this earth to see through people, but to see people through", and she lived by this. The family would like to thank the staff at the Central Park Lodge for their loving care, also to Dr. DiNinno, Dr. Jeraj and Dr. Foley, as well as the staff on 5 East at the Medicine Hat Hospital. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Harvey Knoblich officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Salvation Army, 164 Stratton Way S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1B 3R3, or to the Palliative Care Society, 666 - 5 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4H6, or to the charity of one's choice.
