Obituary - James Farquharson

Mr. James (Jim) Farquharson passed away peacefully at the Riverview Care Center in Medicine Hat on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the age of 76 years. Jim was born in Dundee, Scotland on May 31, 1933, a son to proud parents, James and Lillian Farquharson. He received his education in Scotland where he received his College Degree (Quantity Surveyor) in Construction Management. Shortly after he arrived in Canada, Jim was one of the first professionally recognized Quantity Surveyors in this country. He was quite accomplished in his chosen career and was involved in the construction of many large scale projects. He was employed with Poole Construction as a manager and oversaw projects such as the new phase expansion of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller. With his knowledge and expertise, he gained the respect of his colleagues and peers. Jim will be remembered for his sense of humor and his ‘argumentive’ side and will be missed by his family and friends. Jim is survived by his four sons, Lyell, Leslie, Brant and Wade, and nine grandchildren in Ontario. Hearing of his death, one of the childhood friends of his sons recalled, “His jovial spirit, his endless energy and kind heart is what I will remember, along with his unmistakable laugh, Scottish Brogue, and his being at the center of some of the best stories I have ever heard. Let's face it he was bigger than life, burned bright, and unfortunately as is often true, he could not maintain the pace forever.” He has three surviving sisters in Scotland, Lillian, Sheena, and Pem. In Jim’s honour, a time of remembrance to share stories and honour his life will be held at Mauro’s, 16 - 3rd Street N.E., Medicine Hat on Wednesday afternoon, October 28, 2009 beginning at 2:30p.m.
