Mr. Louis Joseph Robert Fontaine, beloved husband of Mrs. Laura Fontaine, passed away in Medicine Hat on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the age of 78 years. Louis was born on March 25, 1931 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. He married the love of his life Laura, on April 18, 1953 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His faith and devotion to the Roman Catholic Church was evident through the preparation demonstrated for the visit of the late Pope Jean Paul II in 1984. He met Jean Paul II, and was responsible for all security, transportation needs and routes during his Canadian visit. Louis’ long and decorated career of 37 years with the Canadian Armed Forces, will forever be remembered through his achievements as a Decorated career soldier, United Nations Peace Keeper, Rescue citations for saving lives, paratrooper, and a helicopter squadron instructor. During his relaxation time, Louis could be found gardening, woodworking, penning calligraphy and was an avid scholar. He also enjoyed his sports including football, hockey and bowling. Louis’ memory will be treasured in the hearts of his wife, Laura; his children, Laurinda (Maxime) and their family, Brian, Jeffrey, Christopher; Darlene (Jacques) and their family, Valerie, Benoit, Cynthia; Sandra (Raynald) and their sons, Steven, Vincent; Patrick, and his daughters, Megan and Kelly; Corinna, and her children, Philip, Amy; Maureen (Alain) and their son, Liam; Colleen (Patrick) and their daughter, Julianne, as well as his siblings, Isabelle, Theresa, Marie, Romeo, Lucien, Real and numerous nieces and nephews. Louis was predeceased by his father, Eugene Fontaine; his mother, Alice Caron Fontaine; brothers and sisters, Leo, Beatrice and Jenny. Louis will always be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, as a loving husband and father of 7, and grandfather of 15. He was always available to us all. A celebration of Louis’ life will take place at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W., on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Father Gilles LeBlanc officiating. He will be remembered as a fallen comrade through a Poppy Service by the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. #17. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Louis’ name may be made directly to the Salvation Army, 164 Stratton Way S.E., Medicine Hat, AB.
