It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Roy Thomas Dodds. Surrounded by his family, Roy peacefully journeyed to be with God on Sunday, June 13, 2010, at the age of 77 years. He is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Margaret; daughter, Darlene and son-in-law, Graham from Nanaimo, B.C. and his son, Brian in Medicine Hat. He is also survived by his two special grandchildren, Colin and Kayleigh Gillespie. Roy leaves behind brothers, Alec Dodds, Lloyd and David Fischer; sisters, Ellen, Alice, Edith, Laura, Joan and Linda. He was predeceased by his infant son, Gary Joseph in 1958; parents, Robert and Ida; brothers, Bob and Bill as well as one sister, Emma. Roy will also be dearly missed by brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Doreen Phillips, Harold and Grace Phillips, Joan and Willy Mollenbeck, Tom and Alice Phillips; special aunt, Esther Becker as well as many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his best canine friend, Mocha, who loved Roy’s constant affection. Roy was born on May 20, 1933 in the Glenboro area, Manitoba. Roy and Marg met in 1954, were happily married on July 5, 1955, and enjoyed a rich and loving marriage for 55 years. Roy joined his brother Alec in Alberta at the age of eighteen and shortly after started an apprenticeship in plumbing and gas-fitting. He worked for Western Plumbing and Gas-fitting and Fischer’s Plumbing and Heating Ltd. for 25 years. Roy and Marg started Dodds Plumbing and Gas-fitting Ltd. in 1978 and were a great team until Roy suffered a stroke in 1986 and both retired. Prior to retirement, Roy and Marg spent many hours together building their cottage at Elkwater, and enjoyed travelling with their friends Alex and Nikki Chisholm to Hawaii, Jamaica and the Caribbean. Despite the ensuing challenges, Roy was able to maintain a happy and quiet life enjoying time at their cottage with family and friends, following his favourite sports teams,
observing nature and walking in the neighbourhood and in Elkwater. Before his retirement, Roy was involved in the community as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks Club, Connaught and Elkwater Golf Clubs (president in 1986). Roy enjoyed golfing, curling, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Plumbers & Gasfitters Union 496 since 1968. The family would like to thank Doctors Duke and Greefe and the 4 West nursing staff at the Medicine Hat Hospital for their care and compassion.
