Leona-Layvon Chesney

1935 - 2008

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Chesney(2008)

It is with sadness that the family of Leona Layvon Chesney, beloved wife of Roy Chesney of 56 years, announce her unexpected passing on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the age of 73 years. Leona was born on July 31, 1935 near Etzikom, Alberta, a daughter to proud parents, Charles and Elizabeth Anderson. She was raised in the Etzikom area where she not only received her schooling, but developed from a young girl into the classy lady that was Leona Chesney. She took great pride in her girls, often sewing them special outfits. She carried herself well and her disposition was that of a person who could easily adapt to her surroundings, regardless of the task that was presented before her. She had the innate ability to meet the challenges of life and always made the best of what she had. Leona spent her life in the service of helping people. She had a heart of gold and always gave the best of everything she had. At any given time, her door was open to those who needed her whether it was for food, shelter, advice or just true friendship...she was there. Her home was the 'hub' of the community and was well visited. Having a home where everyone felt welcome was one of her greatest achievements. As an informal invitation, she would yell, 'Come on in,' to those that showed up at her door. Children were always given a special place in her heart and home and she would never say 'no' to any of them. Her teachings were based on trust and the belief that if given the opportunity, children will learn more by doing, rather than being shown. Leona leaves this world with a legacy of love and commitment, which will be carried on by her children, grandchildren and the next generations to come. Along with her husband Roy, Leona's love will continue to shine in the hearts of her children and their families which includes a daughter, Carol (John) Piea and their children, Kim, Heather (Travis) - (Abby and Bethany) and Paul; a daughter, Kathy (Allan) Cooper and their family Brett and Dan (Cara) - (Shelton, Paige, Kiadence and Brae); a daughter, Gladys (Will) Stryker and their children Rebecca (Blayne) - (Clay and Daina) and Chad (Megan) - (Wyatt and Eli); a special nephew, Robert Anderson and his son, Joel; two brothers, including her twin, Laverne Lee Anderson and Eric (Gladys) Anderson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Leona was predeceased by her parents, Charles (1959) and Elizabeth (1976) Anderson; brothers, Robert, Edward and Donald; half-sisters, Annabelle and Mildred; an infant daughter, Ruth and a grandson, Aaron Cooper. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13th Street S.W., on Friday, November 7, 2008 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:55 p.m. The Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Loren Hosfield officiating. Interment will take place at the Prairie View Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Leona's name may be made directly to the Children's Wish Foundation, P.O. Box 1148, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 7H3.
