Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Kennedy(2026)

October 27, 1957 ~ January 27, 2026

With heavy hearts, the family of Stewart Ross Kennedy announces his passing in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, following a brief illness with cancer.

Stewart was the beloved husband of Joan and a devoted father to Ryan (Lizzie), Megan (Andy) and Emma (Ahmed). He is also lovingly remembered by his mother, Iona; sister, Laura (Tim); brother, Barry as well as Joan’s extended family and many friends near and far. He was predeceased by his father, Lorne and his brother, Rodney.

After beginning his working life as a sheet metal mechanic, Stewart returned to university in 1986, where he met Joan. They married in 1991 and settled in Medicine Hat after his graduation from law school in 1992, where he built his law practice and raised their family.

Stewart will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, good humour and intellect as well as his love of travel, dinosaur bones and Roman history. His passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him.

The family thanks Dr. Mohanraj and the doctors and staff of Unit 5E for their compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 504 - 2 Street S.E., Medicine Hat on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Joan and family. I am in Mexico and just happened to read the obituaries and saw that Stewart had passed away. I am so shocked and very upset to hear this. He has always been one of my favourite lawyers who would come to the Courthouse when I worked there. He was such a kind and unassuming man who would do anything for anyone. I always enjoyed having a visit with him outside of work. I am so sorry for your loss and pray that your wonderful memories will bring you much peace. I’m sorry I will not be back for his Celebration of Life.

Our sincere condolences to Joan and family upon hearing of Stewart’s passing. I always enjoyed seeing him at the indoor track at Big Marble. A quick catch up on what was going on in each other’s household. We also worked the last provincial election and enjoyed visiting when we would have a lull in the line up.

Hugh was glad to have Stewart come back and sing with the Tartones for even a short time. He was going to try and convince Stewart to join in again!

    Dear Joan and family,
Sending sincere sympathy on the passing of Stewart. He was highly regarded in our legal community. I thought he was one of the funniest, most genuine and humble lawyers I have ever met. Stewart always had a smile and a kind word for others. But his quick wit made him unforgettable. A few years ago I sat with him at a Judge’s dinner and he had the whole table laughing all night. That was the joy of Stewart. I am saddened for your loss. I know his passing will affect you all immeasurably — but how lucky you all were to have him in your life. May the memories sustain you as you learn to move on without him.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a caring and compassionate advocate whose kindness never went unnoticed. He always acknowledged me with a warm greeting and genuine smile-small gestures that spoke volumes about the person he was. He will be remembered with great respect and fondness by the legal community.

We have been so fortunate to travel with Stewart and you. We will forever remember how both of you welcomed us to your Medicine Hat travel group.

From here on in, every time we see or hear something medieval or Roman, memories of Stewart and his considerable skills as a armourer and a great fellow
    will come to mind.

Memories of the great times all of us had when we went to Italy, France and Spain will be treasured forever. RIP Stewart.
