It is with heavy hearts that the family of Mrs. Freda Edel, beloved wife, of the late Mr. Benjamin Edel, announce her passing at River Ridge Seniors Village in Medicine Hat, on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the age of 92 years. Freda was born August 29, 1930, in Emerson, Manitoba to Jonathan and Miriam Edel. On November 28, 1953, she married Benjamin Edel at the East Olds Baptist Church Parsonage in Olds, Alberta. Freda and Ben attended Temple Baptist Church in Medicine Hat for many years. She worked and enjoyed being a waitress, with Phil’s Restaurant in Medicine Hat serving as one of her places of employment. Freda was a hardworking, warm, caring and loving mother. Everything she did was out of devotion to her family. She was a very kind and selfless person, always putting others before herself. Freda was also fun loving and had a humorous side about her. As for sports, she enjoyed watching NHL hockey with her children. Freda had an amazing green thumb... She loved gardening and grew many fruits and vegetables as well as flowers and trees on their acreage. Freda also excelled at cooking and baking; she baked the best apple pie! Things most memorable for Freda would have been the births of her grandchildren, family gatherings at Christmas time and summer vacation visits with her children. Freda was so very proud of her family, and the five children she helped raise. She will be lovingly remembered by her four daughters, Judy Olson, Edwina Edel, Gwendolyn Edel Drake, Andrea Edel; sons-in-law, Ken Olson and Mark Drake; three grandchildren, Joshua Olson, Charlotte Edel and Rachel Edel; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Edel and Evelyn Edel as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Freda was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin Edel in 2016; parents, Jonathan and Miriam Edel; brother, Walter Edel and son, Corwyn Edel. A private family interment will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at the East Olds Baptist Church Cemetery near Olds, Alberta, where Freda’s cremated remains will be placed to rest next to her late husband, Benjamin. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Freda’s name may be made to the Alzheimer Society, #101. 1201 Kingsway Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2Y2 or www.alzheimer.ab.ca.

Edel family, I'm saddened to hear of your loss. As mentioned, I also know your mom was heartfelt, devoted to her family, and a gracious woman. Your family was a safe haven for me as a young girl, I have the best memories of being included in your family gatherings on Sundays around the table with the feasts she prepared for afternoon dinner and was amazed at the roast goose with all the trimmings that were divinely yummy.
What I find most amazing still to this day is when Judy invited me to join the family summer vacation on your drive to Olds, Alberta and then on to Winnipeg. Your family of 7 included me as the 8th person in the jam-packed station wagon to go on this amazing road trip adventure. When I bring the memories of this trip into mind today the experiences I had still fill my heart. And the letters I kept from people I met and pictures are still in my treasure chest. My time being included in the Edel family is a cherished memory and your Mom was truly the heart of your family! I hope you find strength in the loving memories you and so many of us have of her. With loving thoughts to you Judy, your sisters, and your families., Be Well Within as you grieve her loss and then fill your hearts with the joy she shared with you all.
