Obituary - Roy Gale

Roy Duane Gale, beloved husband of the late Anna Gale (nee Wiedemann), passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Friday, September 16, 2022, at the remarkable age of 102 years. Roy’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family: children, Tom Gale of Edmonton, Liz (the late Henri) Baril of Edmonton, Marilyn (Brian) Johnston of Edmonton, David (Wendy) of Cambridge, ON., Stan (Linda) of Medicine Hat and Brian of Edmonton; grandchildren, Mathew (Jackie), Colin (Sonia), Johnathan (Yuka), Scott (Sandy), Sara (Rob), David (Anna), Joshua, Nick (Laura), Nathan (Hailey), Nicola (Chris) and Liam as well as 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. Along with his wife, Anna, and his parents, Hannah and Duane Gale, Roy was predeceased by a son-in-law, Henri; granddaughter, Jennifer as well as three siblings, Fred (Mary), Rene (Bill) and Jim (Shirley). Roy was born in Canora, SK., on June 22, 1920, the third of four children to Hannah and Duane Gale. His family moved to Medicine Hat in 1929, where he was raised in the family home on 8th Street and received his schooling at Connaught School and Alexandra Middle School. Roy worked at various jobs before enlisting in the Army in 1939. He achieved the rank of Sergeant Major before his discharge in January of 1946. In March of 1946, he purchased Dunmore Cash Store, bulk fuel business, town gas well and distribution system, post office and mail hauling contracts. He married Anna K. Wiedemann on February 5, 1947 and they began working together and raising their family. In 1952, they built Sunny Spot Service and Dunmore Tractor Parts, post office, convenience store and auto repair. They sold their entire business in 1974 and built a new home on the east end of Dunmore. Roy then took over a country school bus route, worked as a Real Estate Agent and continued to actively volunteer in the community until retiring in 1991. He was very community minded and a dedicated volunteer donating countless hours to various causes, especially with the Lion’s Club and the Royal Canadian Legion. Roy had many hobbies and interests including cribbage, pool, antique cars, trucks and tractors as well as travelling the world to name a few. He also enjoyed a good game of ball or tossing horseshoes. Roy was a family man through and through. The legacy of his gentle soul will live on through his family and the lives of all those who knew him. Private Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery. Everyone is invited to join the family for a celebration of Roy’s life in the Ortona Room at the Royal Canadian Legion, 702 - 2 Street S.E., Medicine Hat on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Roy’s name may be made directly to the Medicine Hat Lions Club or to the Royal Canadian Legion, Robertson Memorial Branch No. 17.
