Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Nixdorf(2021)

Harvey George Nixdorf, beloved husband of Kathy, succumbed to his illness while surrounded by his family at the Bow Island Health Centre on Monday, January 11, 2021, at the age of 61 years. Along with Kathy, Harvey will be lovingly remembered by his family: sons, Cameron (son, Koven), Craig (daughter, Mila), Cade (Megan Donkersgoed), Cole (Brianne) Aylwin (children, Lincoln and Sawyer) and Brett (Lori) Aylwin; sister, Marj (Duaine) Brown; brother-in-law, Jack Steenhart as well as numerous nieces, nephews and members of Kathy’s family. Harvey was predeceased by his parents, George and Josie Nixdorf; sister, Sharon Steenhart as well as Kathy’s parents, Clarence and Yvonne Thurston. Harvey was a pillar of the Bow Island community serving on many boards throughout the years. He coached his sons hockey and baseball teams, driving them to their games all over the province. Harvey worked for Midwest Surveys for over 30 years before his pre-retirement employment at SMRID. In his free time, he enjoyed tinkering and tooling in his shop, building and creating unique objects and would always have a project on the go. Along with tinkering, other special interests of Harvey included hunting, trips to Mexico with Kathy and spending time at the lake. His most treasured moments were time spent with family... he adored his grandchildren immensely. Whenever he was needed, good or bad, Harvey would be there for anyone who needed him. His sense of humour and his ability to love and be loved, will be missed! Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family service celebrating Harvey’s life will be held at the Evangelical Free Church in Bow Island on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor George Mills officiating. Those wishing to watch the service via livestreaming are encouraged to visit the following link: In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Harvey’s name may be made directly to HALO, 49 Viscount Avenue S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5G4.

My sincere condolences to Kathy and to Harvey's boys and to his family. Harv was a great guy, a good friend, a loyal teammate and just a fun person to be around. As adults, living on different sides of the country, we only saw each other once a year, sometimes less, but every time I ran into Harv, it was like we were picking up a long conversation that we had first begun in elementary school. I will miss his big, friendly presence and that long, happy conversation.

The world has lost a great man way too young, a loving husband, a wonderful father who adored his grand children, and a friend to all. May his memories live in all of your hearts forever. Blessings, Jim and Merle Derzaph

Our deepest sympathies to Kathy and Harv’s family and all friends. It is always further mournful when someone is taken before they can fully enjoy retirement. I met Harvey while working for AEC on Suffield Block, as a surveyor you never had close daily contact but when you did, he was always fun to be around and made work more enjoyable. After transferring to Calgary, we never crossed paths until a couple years ago when he and Kathy purchased the “G Spot” at 40 Mile Park, Harvey & Kathy quickly fit in to the comradery of our cul de sac. His laughter around the campfire will be missed.

My sincere condolences to Kathy and family. Harvey had such an engaging laugh and humble personality. Always quick to offer help or simply pop over for a visit, he was a great friend long after I left Bow Island. The classic definition of a big teddy bear, Harvey's gentle soul -- and that wonderful smile -- will live on in our hearts for a long, long time.

Harvey had a major influence on me. He instilled in me a sense of fascination for surveying that I have to this day, and taught me my first lessons in work ethic. He is largely to blame for my success.
There are many of us here at Midwest that will never forget him.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss.

My husband Brian and I both worked in the Maple Creek Midwest office and were so fortunate to meet and work with Harvey in those years. We were young and just starting out - Harvey was a great 'coach' to us, very knowledgeable. He always had a way to insert laughs and joy into the project where possible. Our thoughts are with his family today, he was a great man.

Our sympathies to Kathy and Family. We only knew Lake Harvey, but from reading condolences we learned that Lake Harv was the same quality guy wherever he was and was so loved by family and friends. Harvey made his world, family and friends better. The lake is forever changed but not our memories of Harv and how he blessed us with his friendship and for tooling us around the park, lake and his big screen outdoor TV.

We are so sorry to hear about Harvey's passing. I remembered Harvey as a young boy, when we shared the same bus route many years ago. Imagine my surprise when, a few years ago in Arizona, this tall gentle man stared down at me and asked if I remembered who he was. Harvey. He reminded me so much of his Dad.
