Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - DeMan(2020)

Patrick John DeMan passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 4, 2020, at the age of 78 years. Left to cherish Patrick’s memory are his children, Dallas (Dallas) DeMan and Pam DeMan (Brendon Hamilton); grandchildren, Brayden (Sydney), Kobi, Cody, Bryce (Sierra), Brooklyn, Rowenna and Tavynn; great-grandchildren, Porter, Tucker and Layah as well as his sister, Margaret. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Norma as well as his sister, Michaela. Patrick was born and raised in Medicine Hat. He didn’t love being a kid or going to school as he acted like he was 18 the majority of his life. Patrick loved his mother dearly and was the apple of her eye. He attended high school in Wilcox, SK where became a proud Notre Dame ‘Hound’. Patrick moved to Yellowknife where he worked in the mines, played hockey and started his family along with his businees career. He was a great hockey player and coach; loving all sports especially baseball in which he won a Little League Championship. Patrick was a very proud Canadian as he always said, “Canada - what a country!” Patrick was an entrepreneur and a fine businessman whether it was delivering the Edmonton Journal, owning a Pepsi-Cola franchise, a hotel in Richmound or his final success owning the Redcliff Truckstop. He loved working at the truckstop and he thought after a lot of years of being a businessman, he didn’t really know what he would grow up to be. Patrick loved the Endersby hunting trips to Ya Ha Tinda with the boys, watching football with Dallas, beer, traveling, golfing with his El Centro family in California, visiting with company, sunny Mondays and friendships. He loved to tell stories and embellish them as he did it to make people feel good and laugh. Patrick was tough... like Dad’s are supposed to be and took care of his family, always telling them who was #1. He had an amazing life and was full of love; always giving and very generous. Patrick didn’t have any bad days and silence was never awkward. The back of his business card, which sums up his life, reads this:

‘Hello old friend, let me introduce myself...

I’m a miner, taxi driver, bootlegger,

Pepsi man, hotel owner, bartender,

railroader, truckstop operator.

I’m a football player, hockey player

coach, golfer, fisherman, hunter

I’m also a gardener, keeper of koi

and a dog owner.

Lastly, I’m a son, husband, father,

grandfather and brother.’

A Celebration of Patrick’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 - 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Friday, July 10, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. Due to restrictions in place regarding COVID - 19 from the Chief Medical Officer of Health - funeral services are now limited to no more than 100 attendees including family and funeral home staff. What an unexpected Loss. Pat battled as hard and as positively as anyone could. We were all looking forward to seeing him one more time at Sunbeam Lake. His gentle manner and giving heart will always be cherished. I am honoured to have met him and have spent many evenings in conversation, discussion decor, gardening and general B.S. Pat will be missed immensely by me...Princess Big Smoke. 🥰

We consider ourselves blessed to have spent time with Pat for several winters in the desert in El Centro, CA. He liked to represent “Mexico” in our annual “Can-Am” competitions....which we always took to mean that he liked everybody & wasn’t taking sides. We don’t really know if that part was true, but we do believe the other side definitely was....over golf & beers & campfires & Irish stew, we never heard anyone say a bad word about him. Rest In Peace, dear Friend.

Very sorry to hear of our Dear friend Pat's passing. Pat has been a friend of mine since we were kids. We covered a lot of ground together whether it was Europe or the frozen North, Yellowknife to be exact. Skated and played hockey in lots of rinks. He was a true friend and he will be missed. Suffering is over so now he can rest in peace. Cheers Ron

I was sadden in hearing of the passing of Pat. I had been aware of his battle with cancer. Pat and I go back to school years, playing football for the St. Mary,s Roughriders. Playing football and hockey at Notre Dame College, and our years of playing hockey and sharing a room at the Con bonk house as we both worked for Cominco as hard rock miners in Yellowknife. Great memories. R.I.P.

Margaret, Dallas & family and Pam & family:

Our family is not able to be with you physically today but I still want to share some of my thoughts with you. Pat was away from home during my early years, but I have vivid memories of our family's excitement when he would return for family get-togethers and the refrain of "Patrick's coming!" rings in my mind. When I think of him, I see a man with a sense of humor and adventure, commitment and inner strength. He welcomed challenges and handled them with foresight and wisdom. Patrick loved family and was always there to provide support and guidance. He was immensely proud of his children and their offspring. He had a warm and welcoming spirit and gifted us with a legacy of compassion, love and the importance of family. And when he had a choice to make, he always chose kindness.

Even though we cannot join you in person today, our family is with you via the live stream and we, too, will be sharing our memories of Patrick. We will miss him.
