Mr. Gordon William Vaessen, beloved husband of Mrs. Ann Vaessen, passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the age of 82 years as a result of complications to Pulmonary Fibrosis. Along with Ann, Gordon leaves to cherish his memory four children and their families: daughter, Dana (Leonard) Lamontagne and their children, Jordon (Stephanie) and their children, Anna and Noah, Drew (Taralyn) and their children, Parys, Bronson and Harlow, Megan (Michael) and their son, William and Leslie and her son, Grayson; daughter, Leisa (Andrew) Kraska and their children, Michael (Chelsey) and David; son, Doug (Marianne) Vaessen and their children, Anna and Leo and son, Scott Vaessen; sister, Marie (Gerry) Zimmer as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his son, Michael; parents, Leo and Mary; brothers, Peter (June), Frank, Chuck (Betty), Len (Isabel), Paul (Clara), Edward, Norbert (Joyce); sisters, Helen (Bruce) and Joan. Gordon was Leo and Mary Vaessen’s youngest son. He was born on the family farm near Leipzig, SK. After his Mother died when he was 7 years old, his Father, Leo, raised him along with his siblings. He attended local schools and then St. Thomas College in North Battleford at the age of 14. He left the farm at the age of 15 and worked in Alberta and Saskatchewan at various jobs until 18 years of age when he started working for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. He became a Lineman at the age of 18 and was a Foreman by the time he moved to Rosetown, Saskatchewan in 1957 at the age of 20. Gordon met the love of his life, Ann Mary Wieler, in Elrose, Saskatchewan, in the summer of 1957. They were married August 30, 1958. Daughters Dana and Leisa were born in Rosetown and the couple then moved to Swift Current where sons Douglas and Scott were born. The family moved to Climax in 1967 where Gordon became the District Operator. They then moved to Assiniboia in 1973 where he became the District Operator in Charge. Michael was born and passed away as an infant in Assiniboia. Gordon retired in 1997 and they remained in Assiniboia until moving to Medicine Hat Alberta in 2014. Gordon was a Man of Faith, a devout Catholic, and family always came first to him. As a family we enjoyed many vacations camping in Alberta and BC and spending weekends at Cypress Hills Provincial Park. Dad loved politics and sports, was a great schmear player and whipped us at crib regularly. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and pretended to be a Blue Jays fan as his heart was with the Yankees. He was also devastated when the Montreal Expos folded. At a young age Dad was an exceptional fastball player, batting over .500 and playing 1st base for the Swift Current team. He instilled the love of sports in his children and we grew up competing as hard as we could and admiring exceptional talent. Dad loved Mom more than anything, he was always proud to have “Wonder Woman” on his arm. He was a man of integrity who loved his family. Our Hearts are broken and we will miss him until we see him again. We Love You DAD! The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat, on Friday, April 12, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Iqbal Khurshid celebrant. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery with a time of fellowship thereafter in the Parish Hall.
