Obituary - Johannes Van Ooyen

Johannes Van Ooyen

1943 - 2009

Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Van Ooyen(2009)

Mr. Johannes (Joe) Van Ooyen passed away peacefully at the Riverview Care Centre on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the age of 66 years. Joe will be fondly remembered by his daughter Holly; sister Mary ( Leo) Aarts and their children, Angela (Darryl) Griffin, John and Lisa Aarts. He is also survived by Holly's mother, Elizabeth and her children Lisa Wardle and Joel (Gillian) Wardle and their daughter, Kiyla Wardle. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Theodorus; brothers, Cor and Marius and his aunt and uncle who raised him from childhood Berta and Nick de Jong. Born Johannes Theodorus Van Ooyen on January 23, 1943 in Appeltern, Holland, he immigrated with his family to the Lethbridge area in 1956 and they started farming in Seven Persons in 1961. Joe continued actively operating what had developed into quite a model farm up until a stroke sidelined him to some extent and dictated his move to Riverview Care Centre in Medicine Hat where he resided until his passing. Joe was incredibly community minded, having served many years on boards in the Seven Persons community where he played a major role in several projects. He served in various positions on farm related boards, committees, and business ventures as well. He was elected councilor and served as Reeve of Cypress County. The success and accomplishments during his terms made him proud. Joe possessed a fantastic memory for detail and he was very meticulous when it came to repairing or building and his fields had the straightest lines. Perhaps most of all, Joe was known for his great sense of humor and his ability to use it to keep tough situations in perspective. He went out of his way to help those in need and in doing so, made many new friends and strengthened old friendships. Joe enjoyed playing cards but had a passion for hockey, rarely missing a Tigers game. Joe created many memories during his life, but the most memorable occasion was the birth of his daughter, Holly. Joe will be missed as he was loved by all. Relatives and friends are invited for Prayers at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, 238 - 2nd Ave. N.E., on Monday, June 29, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Father John L. Maes celebrant. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Joe's name may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 124, 430 - 6th Avenue S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 2S8.
