Cook Southland Funeral Chapel - Burko(June 29, 2010)

Mrs. Alice Rachel Burko (Deans) passed away peacefully at the Langley Hospital, Langley, B.C., on Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at the age of 99 years. Alice was born on August 10, 1910, in Kenora, Ontario (home of her Aunt Rae Moon). Her parents, George and Bertha Deans relocated to Medicine Hat, where she was raised, in 1912. In 1920, her twin siblings George and Olive were born. Alice had a “lifetime of music”, studying piano as a young girl and then teaching piano and the organ in her adult years. Alice married Michael Edward Burko on November 7, 1944, and shared over 43 years of marriage together. They both enjoyed their years in Langley, B.C. She entertained many people at musical gatherings at church, the Langley Lodge and at Harrison Landing. In the past few years despite macular degeneration, she delighted the residents of Harrison Landing by playing piano for Glee Club on Friday evenings with her best friend Barbara Stuart at her side. Barbara and Alice played piano together many other times as well. Alice also kept fit by attending Tai Chi classes at Harrison Landing and going for walks with Barbara. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Mike Burko; parents, George and Bertha Deans; brother, George, his wife Jessie and their son Glenn; sister, Olive Deans (Dunn) and brother-in-law, John Dunn. She leaves to cherish her memory, niece, Donna Van Waes (Dunn) and husband Tony Van Waes, their children, Nelson (wife Melissa and son Nolan), Vanessa (husband Cliff deMello and son Leighton) and Michael (Jamie Langdon); niece, Nancy Bitz (Dunn); nephew, John (Marilyn)?Dunn and their children, Ryan Dunn, Amanda (Ken) Bulaz and daughter Lexie; nephew, Verne Deans; Mike’s sister, Irene Burko; long time best friend, Babara Stuart and her daughters; the caring staff of Harrison Landing, Susan, Lynn, Chantelle, Carmen, Dorothy, Mike, Laurie and all her musical friends. Alice will be forever remembered by us all. A Celebration of Alice’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at 2:00 P.M. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
